Harry Shum Jr. stars as Sam, a home-health nurse who's brilliant at his job and quietly falling apart.
One night, stretched too thin, he makes a mistake. A small one, the kind anyone could make. It costs a young patient her life. What follows is the slow unraveling of a good man trying to bury the truth under a facade of perfection.
Amidst the drama, the film is also a compassionate tribute to the impossible work medical professionals do every day and the special lives they touch. Even the story's darker turns serve as a warning about what happens when we take for granted those who sacrifice so much to serve others.
Chris Hartwell
With a father who is a doctor and a wife who is a home-health nurse, Chris Hartwell found himself writing Do No Harm after years of listening to their stories — not only about patients, but about the pressure and the weight medical professionals carry home.
This is Hartwell's first feature film, but he's been telling stories his whole life, crafting award-winning short films, acting, and teaching. As a university professor in Houston, TX, Hartwell mentors young filmmakers and this film was an opportunity for him to demonstrate first-hand how to craft a compelling and meaningful cinematic story.
Caregiver burnout is real and widespread
The people we count on to care for us — nurses, home-health aides, the family members who become caregivers without training — are quietly running on empty. Those who persist do so with enormous pressures, expectations, and stakes.
We made this film in part to honor these heroes, and to show honestly what the work asks of the people who do it. When Sam makes a fatal mistake, the story doesn't shy away from the denial, fear, and blame-shifting anyone in his shoes would face — and even amidst all of that, he's revealed to be a deeply compassionate support for the patients he's entrusted with.
